Elementary Reading and Writing

These courses are designed to help elementary students improve their reading and writing abilities.  The courses are taught and overseen by Amy Bauschard

Amy Bauschard

Amy Bauschard, the Director of the Global Academic Commons Online Programs for Young Learners, is the director of the Carpe Diem Academy operated by Mercyhurst University, and has been named an “Afterschool Champion” by the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network (PSAYDN). She was nominated and selected for her “exemplary commitment, dedication, and outstanding work in supporting meaningful, high-quality, afterschool programming for children and youth.” She has taught at Mercyhurst University as a faculty member in the Education department for five years and also overseas the Mercy Center for the Arts, a preschool that offers a unique correlated program of art, science, music , dramatic movement and literature. She has more than a decade of teaching experience at the early childhood level, and she has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with both principal and reading specialist certifications. Amy works to adapt our public speaking and debate curriculum to provide an exceptional learning experience for our youngest students. She also oversees our writing program for young learners.

24 hour course

Objectives:

–      At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

o   Know the difference between a sentence and fragment.

o   Write elaborate and detailed sentences using correct parts of speech

o   Write various types of writing.

Sessions Topic Description
1 & 2 The Basics The student will review the basics to writing: complete thought vs. fragment, using correct punctuation, and basic grammar principles.
3-6 Stages of Writing The student will follow the stages of writing (prewriting, drafting, editing, and publishing) on a topic of their choice.
7-12 Types of Writing The student will complete the Stages of Writing for each type of writing (Narration, Persuasion, Description, Exposition).

50 hour course

Objectives:

–       At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of basic essay structure, including introduction, body and conclusion

2. Employ the various stages of the writing process, including pre-writing, drafting, editing and publishing.

3. Use descriptive, narrative and persuasion modes

4. Write concise sentences

5. Use quotation, paraphrase and summary

The Sentence The student will review the basics to writing: What is a sentence? Types of sentences. Editing sentences for coherence. Combining sentences to improve flow.
3 & 4

The Paragraph What is a paragraph? Sentences as building blocks. Main idea. Content. Coherence. Using transitions to improve flow.
5 & 6

Vocabulary

Part 1

The student will expand their vocabulary to supporting their writing.
7 & 8

Prewriting The student will select a topic of their choice and complete the prewriting stage.
9 & 10

Drafting The student will complete the drafting stage of their writing based off of their prewriting and selected topic.
11 & 12

Vocabulary

Part 2

The student will expand their vocabulary to supporting their writing.
